Teeth whitening strips have become the most efficient and inexpensive way to achieve a Hollywood-like bright smile. They are easily available in drug stores, grocery stores, and online retailers. However, like all other dental products, they differ in quality, a way of application and chemical ingredients.

It is no mystery that the most effective whitening strips contain hydrogen and carbamide peroxide. The American Dental Association (ADA) has confirmed that up to 10% peroxide in over-the-counter whitening products is safe.

Editor’s top pick: Crest 3D White

NOTE: We were surprised how many products did not deliver results or took three times as long to achieve a modest teeth whitening effect. Below is a list of the most effective whitening strips that we tested (and yes, we all have whiter than snow teeth now).

Crest 3D White Professional Effects

crest-3d-professional-effects-teeth-whitening-kit

Highlights:

  • Results last 12+ months
  • Enamel safe
  • No slip technology
  • 40 strips included (20 treatments)
  • Use ones a day for 30 minutes
  • Lower strip will cover up to 8 teeth

This is by far Crest’s best teeth whitening system. The effectiveness of these strips is comparable to a professionally done bleaching or light and laser procedure at the dental office. The difference is that it will cost considerably less, but it will take longer.

Crest has developed an advanced seal technology that prevents the strips from slipping. This has always been an issue with similar products, especially when they need to stick to the teeth for 30 minutes or longer. No matter the surface of the teeth, or the amount of saliva produced, these strips will hold their ground.

The strong bond to the teeth means that very little formula will be “spilled” over the gums. It also means that you do not have to stay still while whitening your teeth. You can go about your business, just do not forget to remove the strips after the recommended 30 minutes. Also, you do not want to walk into your workplace and smile at people with the strips on.

You can expect to see results within 3 treatment days. This is not to say that your teeth will be 2-3 shades whiter, but you will begin to see the difference. Particularly, if you are a heavy coffee or tea drinker like myself.

After 20 sessions your teeth will be 3-4 shades whiter. The package includes 40 strips total. 20 for the lower and 20 for the upper teeth.

Crest 3D Glamorous White

crest-3d-white-glamorous

Highlights:

  • Results last 6 months
  • Enamel safe
  • No slip technology
  • 28 strips included (14 treatments)
  • Use ones a day for 30 minutes
  • Lower strip will cover up to 6 teeth

This is another Crest product that will whiten your teeth within 2 weeks. It is ADA approved and with 10% peroxide is perfectly safe for the enamel.

Glamorous White is a bit cheaper than Crest’s Professional Effects, but it also does not guarantee that results will last for over a year. Instead, the whitening results should last around six months. This is still pretty good, considering you will not have to use the strips in that period of time.

When tested, the strips never slipped off my teeth. If I did not set a timer, I would often forget to remove the product after 30 minutes. The strips truly mold to your teeth and feel quite comfortable.

Most people report seeing results after the third or fourth day. This will greatly depend on the condition of your teeth, of course. However, within a week your teeth should be a shade brighter. At this point, it is really easy to tell.

Keep in mind, this kit includes 28 strips. This is good for 14 sessions, or 2 weeks if you do not miss a day. As mentioned above, the concentration of peroxide is at 10%, however, there are other chemicals at play here that are meant to speed up the whitening process.

Also, the bottom strips of Glamorous White are smaller and will cover up to 6 normal size teeth. In comparison, Professional Effects lower strips can cover up to 8 teeth.

NOTE: Some reviewers with sensitive teeth have reported experiencing discomfort after the fourth or fifth session. It appears that this product is not as friendly as the Professional Effects.

Bright White by Lovely Smile

bright-white-teeth-whitening-strips-image

Highlights:

  • Enamel safe
  • No slip technology
  • 28 strips included (14 treatments)
  • Use once a day for 30-120 minutes (Dental Dorks does not recommend you exceed the 45-minute mark)
  • Lower strip will cover up to 6 teeth

This is a really good product, but it is hard to rank it above Crest for two main reasons.

First, the company does not seem to manufacture anything else but this product. It is a new brand and even though the majority of reviews are positive, it is still hard to rank it behind dental giants Crest. If the company had more authority or was actively involved in dental research and innovation, I would have considered ranking Bright White above Glamorous White.

Second, it does not appear that this product is ADA approved. There is no indication on the packaging, nor did we receive an answer from Lovely Smile.

Despite not being entirely trustworthy, Bright White is a good product that will deliver solid whitening results.

The kit includes 28 lower and upper strips all equipped with a non-slip technology that works really well. Unlike Crest’s strips, these can be applied to the teeth for up to 2 hours. This is meant to speed up the whitening process.

NOTE: We do not recommend you keep any whitening strip in your mouth longer than 45 minutes. Even though all products declare to be enamel safe, it is best if you do not test their claim on your teeth.

The gel on these strips is thicker when compared to other strips. I personally did not mind this, but it could be a turn off for people with more sensitive teeth.

DentaPro 2000 Teeth Whitening Strips

denta-pro2000-teeth-whitening-strips

Highlights:

  • Enamel safe
  • No slip-grip technology
  • 28 strips included (14 treatments)
  • Use once a day for 30 minutes
  • Lower strip will cover up to 6 teeth

This is a new line of whitening strips by a company that excels in manufacturing boil and bite mouth guards.

On average, it will take up to a week before any visible results occur. Considering this kit contains two weeks’ worth of treatment strips, you will need to buy again in order to achieve three or more shades of whiter teeth.

DentaPro 2000 has their own no-slip grip technology that seems to work just fine. The strips will stay in place for as long as they have to.

You might consider this product if you are looking to whiten your teeth by one or two shades. It costs twice as less than Crest’s products and it will do a decent job in two weeks’ time. Should you desire to whiten your teeth further, you can always purchase a second kit.

NOTE: This product appeared to have too many 5/5 star reviews by non-verified buyers. This is usually a sign of artificially generated (or fake) reviews.

Lumeeno Double Elastic Gel Strips

lumeeno-whitening-strips-for-teeth

Highlights:

Enamel safe

No slip technology

28 strips (14 treatments)

Use once a day for 15 minutes (do not use longer than 30 minutes)

6% peroxide (10% is standard for whitening products)

We included these strips in our initial testing because of the great reviews buyers were posting. Even though there is no information about the company online, surely there will be something on the packaging (we thought). Well, there wasn’t.

At Dental Dorks we are daredevils, well, Jim is (thank you, Jim). So, Jim researched all ingredients online and tested the product.

To everyone’s surprise, considering these cost $10, the results were not dreadful and Jim still has a full set of teeth (upper and lower!).

We found that the peroxide concentration in Lumeeno’s strips is around 6%. This is much lower when compared to other brands. 10% is usually the standard with most whitening products, not just strips.

Other than that, the strips did not slip, and whitening of the teeth was visible within a week or so.

NOTE: Albeit this being a very cheap product, we recommend you try Crest of Lovely Smile first.

Not Recommended Whitening Strips

not-recommended

Whenever we do product research, we always try to include a lot of brands in the initial investigation. This is done mostly because we enjoy catching new and trendy brands, so we can be the first ones to review them. It helps us add value to our ever-growing community.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of brands that try to cheat their way into consumers’ hands. This is mostly done by generating fake, or paid reviews. Such reviews can be found on large online e-commerce platforms such as Amazon, eBay, Walmart, and others.

At Dental Dorks we consider it a disservice if we do not reference these brands in order to protect consumers. So, here is a list of whitening strip products that Dental Dorks does not approve of:

Sheer White

Could not find reliable information about the company.

No information about the chemical ingredients.

The strips were already dried up when we received them. The product itself had expired a year or so ago.

EZGO or E Z GO Strips

Could not find reliable information about the company.

They claim to be FDA approved, but FDA does not regulate whitening strips in any capacity.

The gel sometimes remains on the film backing, and not the strip.

The strips continuously fall off and the gel tastes awful. Even if you manage to keep them in your mouth for 30 minutes it will be at the expense of all future taste.

Reviewers who purchased one kit that contains 14-day treatments report using the product for 30 days and getting amazing results. Mathematically impossible; therefore, we marked those 5/5 star reviews as fake.

Cool Teeth Whitening

Not so cool, really. Their strips not only fail to whiten, but they are very rough on sensitive teeth. Our tester reported severe nerve and gum pain after the third use.

The gel falls off the strip or remains stuck to the film backing. If you do get it to stay on the strip, it does not taste good. It is hard to keep it on your teeth longer than 30 minutes because it keeps slipping.

Non-peroxide strips. No wonder they fail to deliver whitening results.

Could not find reliable information about the company. It appears that these are manufactured overseas and sold through various e-commerce platforms.

How Teeth Whitening Strips Work

teeth-whitening-strips-general-image

Often touted as cost-effective, strips are quite capable of eliminating teeth stains that have accumulated over years. There is no doubt that they work, the question is how?

Made from a variety of thin and flexible plastics, such as polyethylene. One side of the plastic is coated with a whitening gel whose main whitening ingredient is either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. Some strips may contain more peroxide than others. The ADA has determined that anything below 10% can be considered enamel safe, and so most companies oblige by that statement.

Once applied to the teeth, the peroxide begins to slowly remove stubborn stains from the teeth. All strips need to be removed after a certain period of time, most commonly 30 minutes.

How Fast Do Whitening Strips Deliver Results

On average, most people begin to see results within 4 or five applications. This is, if you use a decent product for 5 days in a row, you should notice your teeth beginning to get whiter.

Of course, different people have different teeth, so the time period may vary. However, peroxide gel has been proven time and again that it whitens teeth.

If using a certain brand for a week does not deliver results, replace it with a different one. The top three whitening strips reviewed in this post will not fail you!

Benefits of Whitening Strips

Benefits of Teeth Whitening

Not expensive. Whitening teeth at the dentist’s office will cost hundreds of dollars. Not to mention, insurances do not cover such aesthetic procedures. All it takes is some peroxide and a widely available plastic in order to make a good whitening strip. For this reason, they are relatively inexpensive.

Easy to use. All kits come with two sets of strips. One for the lower teeth and one for the upper teeth. Application instructions are easy to follow and always included with the packaging. Following the directions is easy and once applied, you just need to remember to remove them and rinse your mouth afterward.

Quick results. We live in a fast-paced society where a month seems like a year. But, believe me, getting your teeth whiten within 2 or 3 weeks is an amazing accomplishment. Considering the fact that you have been continuously staining those same teeth for years before that.

Best Practices

teeth-whitening-strips-best-practices

Always brush your teeth before applying whitening strips. You want to make sure all visible plaque, bacteria and food debris are removed, so they do not get stuck between your teeth and the strip.

It is recommended to wait at least 30 minutes in between brushing and applying strips. This is done in order to avoid potential irritation of the gums and enamel.

Applying peroxide strips on non-brushed teeth can further already existing tooth decay or other dental problems. In addition, food debris and plaque make it harder for whitening strips to do their job and deliver swift and quick results.

You can always gently brush your teeth after applying whitening strips. Especially, if you notice that rinsing does not remove all the gel from the teeth.

Strips in no way replace brushing and flossing. Keep that in mind and continue to brush your teeth twice a day for 2-3 minutes to maintain a healthy oral hygiene.

Dangers of Whitening Strips

The majority of products on the market are safe. However, there are always a few exceptions.

Always be wary of whitening strips that fail to list their active ingredients. These are more likely to contain chlorine dioxide instead of hydrogen peroxide.

Chlorine dioxide is the same acid that is widely used to sanitize swimming pools and Jacuzzis. When applied to teeth, this acid begins to destroy the surface of the enamel in order to whiten it. This will unavoidably lead to accelerated tooth decay.

Furthermore, chlorine dioxide is poisonous and there is always a slight chance that you may accidentally swallow it by using such strips. Realistically, a small amount should not be hazardous to your health. Just make sure you do not eat and swallow the entire strip!

Otherwise, whitening strips are pretty safe. Especially, if you go with a reputable brand such as Crest.

In any case, follow the application directions and do not exceed the recommended time frames. In addition, do not try and rush the entire whitening process by applying strips 2-3 times a day. This will triple the amount of peroxide gel your teeth come in contact with.
