Closer Look at the Oral-B Pro 8000 Toothbrush

The Oral-B Genius Pro 8000, is a great brush which sits just underneath the most premium toothbrush that Oral-B offers in this range, the Genius 9000. Being available only in black, it is still a beautifully designed toothbrush. It has a more futuristic design than Sonicare models. This certainly makes it more interesting to look at.

It uses something known as 3D cleaning action, this means that the toothbrush not only rotates, it also oscillates and pulsates to create a greater clean. There are some features offered which can be seen on the higher end toothbrushes such as a pressure sensor and modes for sensitive/whitening.

Being one of the leading names in dental hygiene, Oral-B really have produced a solid toothbrush by all industry standards. Price wise, it is out there with the most expensive electric toothbrushes. Perhaps this is due to do the customizable multi-color SmartRing technology that connects to your smartphone and allows real-time “brush-coaching”.

Since brush-coaching is not really a word, and I just made it up, let me elaborate. The SmartRing is a flashing light that changes colors based on how the toothbrush is being used. So, if you are pressing too much, a red light will flash – indicating you need not press as hard. But, more about these features below.

Design of the Pro 8000 by Oral-B

Looking at the design of the Oral-B Genius Pro 8000, it is funky and flashy. This is not a clean and sophisticated design by all means. But, I do not think Oral-B was going for such a design anyways. I think they’ve left this for Philips.

The Oral-B has flashy buttons and symbols assigned to different functions. It still looks pretty cool and the flashing SmartRing gives it a futuristic look. Almost like a tiny spaceship getting ready to take off.

The overall design of the Pro 8000 is well thought in terms of height and weight. There is nothing more annoying than a toothbrush too chubby to hold, or too long to operate. The 8000 sits comfortably at 24cm tall (brush head included) and it weighs 140 grams. This does not place it among the lightweights, but it also does not categorize the model as obese.

The Genius 8000 comes only in black, as mentioned above. It is made out of tough plastic that is resistant to water, bacteria, and toothpaste. Therefore, minimizing the possibility of mold build up and elements of the brush rusting in any manner. So, use under the shower while humbling your favorite Katy Perry song. I am pretty sure this fully sealed toothbrush is also resistant to bad singing.

The Pro 8000 looks less like a typical dental instrument, compared to its predecessors. One of the main reasons is that the handle is packed with symbols that illuminate whenever the brush is in use. For example, if you are using the Gum Care mode, a blue tooth icon illuminates. That’s pretty cool. Until you realize that all of these extra flashy symbols help drain the battery faster.

What seems a bit discriminatory, is that there is no icon included in the standard Daily Clean mode. That is quite hurtful, as at the end of the day most people opt in for that mode anyways.

The brush is quite comfortable to hold. There is a dotted rubber grip at the rear of the handle which allows for a more solid grip, even when the toothbrush gets wet. It feels both smooth and grippy.

The LED SmartRing is located at the neck of the toothbrush, so it is hard to miss it when it begins to flash. Whether you like it or not, it’s in your face! Here is a basic video that demonstrates this feature.

Should you connect the brush to the phone and turn on the app, your screen will illuminate at the same time and same color as your brush.

The Genius 8000 model is all about being black. This includes all accessories, to the point where it gets a little monotonous. I would have loved to see a little blue or green in there.

Genius Features of the Oral-B Pro 8000

Oral-B Pro 8000 has 6 cleaning modes. Not 5, like most websites, advertise.

Daily Clean  – This is the standard cleaning mode. The one most people end up using at the end of the day. After they spend some time playing around with the other modes.

Gum Care – This mode uses a lower oscillating speed and it is best utilized with the Cross Action brush head. It is meant to massage the gum line while stimulating blood flow. This is good for repairing damage and stimulating the healing process of receding gums. Check out this list of best toothbrushes for gums that are in recession.

Sensitive – Recommended to use with the Sensitive brush head, this mode still provides a thorough cleaning but at lower speeds. It is, therefore, more gentle on your teeth.

Whitening – This is pretty self-explanatory. It is a mode designed to offer a superior polishing of the teeth, therefore, helping them get whiter. It works best with the 3D White brush head. However, it also greatly depends on the type of toothpaste you are using.

Pro Clean – This is a more powerful brushing mode. It offers an additional 3,000 brush head movements per minute when compared to the regular Daily Clean mode. We found it to be a bit too harsh on the teeth.

Tongue Cleaning – At Dental Dorks, we are pretty skeptical about this one. You do not really need oscillation or high-speed vibrations to brush your tongue. There are no clinical studies that demonstrate the usefulness of this specific mode.

The most advertised feature of this toothbrush is the fact that it connects via Bluetooth to your smartphone. There are quite a few things that can be done within the app that Oral-B has built, such as, Achievements, Dental Office, Journeys, and Guidance. There is also a light up pressure sensor on the brush which will help you to avoid applying too much pressure whilst you are brushing.

Travel Case

This is a simple, black, branded plastic box. It does offer charging capabilities for your phone as well as your toothbrush. But, it is nothing in comparison to the sleek and well-designed travel case that the DiamondClean comes in.

Oral-B could have put a bit more effort into the travel case design. It does the job, of carrying brush heads and charge. But, when you are buying a high-end toothbrush, you expect everything to be high end.

The good thing is that the travel case supports 110-240V. So, you can finally enjoy an Oral-B toothbrush that you can carry around with you when you travel the world.

The Oral-B genius will help to keep track of every brushing session you have. Recording the amount of time spent brushing, the amount of time which was spent applying too much pressure, not to mention that it can also record the frequency of flossing, rinsing and tongue cleaning. You can choose to view your data either daily, weekly or monthly, as well as being able to view your data for the entirety of having the toothbrush.

Achievements help you to feel a sense of accomplishment every time you brush your teeth. Keeping track of your streaks for brushing, tongue cleaning, flossing and rinsing then providing badges when you complete these, which it classes as “Good Habits”.

Dental Care Journeys

Broken down the dental care journeys are pre-programmed routines, these will help to guide you through brushing if you require a certain outcome. There are varies options, one, for example, is Fresh Breath, this routine will help guide you through the key areas which cause bad breath and ensure that you give them a deep clean.

My Dental Office

This feature helps you to manage and keep your dental appointments. You simply need to enter when your dental appointment is and the app will give you a reminder so that you don’t forget to go.

Professional Guidance

Whilst you are at your dental appointment, your dentist can use the app to help you improve your oral health, they do this by adding in reminders for you to brush, floss and clean your tongue and rinse. They can also recommend products to you and add appointment reminders for you so that you don’t have to worry about forgetting or programming it in yourself.

The app features a timer to help you countdown the recommended two minute brushing time. Often people get distracted or cut their brushing short because they get bored, the app tries to combat this by having a news real which shows up at the bottom underneath the timer.

Toothbrush Handle

Of course, one of the great features of the Oral-B Genius 8000 toothbrush is that you can fully customize your settings. There are 12 colors to choose from for the Smart Ring, once you have chosen the color, it will flash the selected color once it is time for you to move to another section.

Position Detection

When you open up the box after purchasing you will notice that there is a smartphone holder, this is not for your car but it is to be placed upon your mirror. This will prevent the movement of the phone whilst brushing. The app works by scanning your face, then the toothbrush with the position detector will figure out the amount of time which has been spent brushing a certain section of your mouth.

How does the app know which way the toothbrush is facing? The app coordinates by utilizing your smartphone’s front-facing camera. This is why there is a smartphone holder included in the package. You can place it on your mirror, or anywhere flat, really. It is well-designed and it will suction into any flat surface.

Once you position the phone upright, you can begin brushing. It is quite the experience the first few times. That is if you can stand still as a statue! In order for the app to track effectively, you need to master your balancing act and learn to be as cool and calm as a cucumber. I admit I had some difficulties with this.

At most times, the app was quite inaccurate. The slightest tilt of the head upsets the tracking of the app. If you close your mouth more than you should, the app also loses tracking capabilities. Definitely an interesting idea, but also definitely not well-thought. Much like iPhone’s Siri. It looks great on paper and presentations until you start using it.

If you are like me, and you like to walk around the house while brushing. Or you just cannot sit tight in one place, the Position Detection feature will not work for you.

Testing the Genius Pro 8000 Model

Oral-B have been gracious enough to include 3 different brush heads with their Genius Pro 8000 model. This is good because you get to experiment and find out which brush head works best for you. This way, once the bristles are gone and it is time to replace, you will know exactly which head to go for.

The Pro-8000 has the best battery life of all the Oral-B electric toothbrushes on the market. Yes, this does not mean much, given that older models use NiMH batteries. The battery used in this model is, of course, built in and not replaceable.

This model will last around 12 days when fully charged. This is still 8 days shorter of the top line Philips toothbrushes. This is most definitely something that Oral-B needs to work on. The good thing is that it only takes around 12 hours to fully charge.

The charging stand only supports 220-240V, like any other Oral-B model. However, as mentioned above, the travel case works with lower voltages.

The Genius 8000 will deliver a great clean. Using the app will deliver great frustrations. And yet, the price of this model is greatly determined by the added functionalities of the app. The mere availability of the Bluetooth technology makes this electric toothbrush more expensive than models that will deliver the same cleaning results.
