Many people find that the tooth extraction healing process is much more dreadful than the actual tooth pulling itself. There will be quite a lot of pain and discomfort, plus some odd sensations as your mouth gets accustomed to the loss.
But, tooth extraction is a fairly common procedure that rarely has any serious complications. So, set your nerves at ease and read our Dental Dork’s guide covering what to expect during tooth removal recovery.
Tooth Extraction Recovery
In general, a tooth extraction takes just over a week to heal. Sometimes it can take up to 2 weeks if you’re a slow healer or have a minor infection, but very rarely will you need to suffer from tooth extraction pain for longer than the first few hours.
During the healing process, the gap where your tooth was will slowly recover. Your gums and sometimes bone too will grow and fill in the gap, called the socket. You might experience bleeding at first, and over the week scabs might loosen where the blood has clotted inside the socket.
As for the pain, this is usually topical to the area where the tooth was extracted and can be eased with general painkillers including Paracetamol, Tylenol, Advil, and Ibuprofen. Your dentist might give you topical anesthetics to numb the worst of the pain. Other than that, there are some home remedies that have been proven to help.
Different Tooth Extractions
The exact healing process and pain will depend on the tooth you have removed. Generally, the larger the tooth that was removed, the longer the healing period will be. Multiple sockets at once may also take longer, simply because your mouth is trying to heal a larger area in one go.
Baby teeth, molars, premolars, incisors, canines and wisdom teeth will all take between 1 week and 2 weeks to heal. Wisdom teeth will take closer to 2 weeks, and baby teeth will be the quickest to heal in just 1 week. The rest fall in-between.
The Healing Process
This is what you can expect during the tooth removal healing process.
First 24 Hours
The dentist may give you something to bite on and painkillers to take once the anesthetic wears off. Your speech may be slurred and you’ll be unable to swallow if your tongue is numb.
Bleeding should stop after a couple of hours at most. There will be a clot forming in the socket – you might be able to feel it with your tongue but resist the urge to keep prodding it.

First Week
Once the first 24 hours have gone by, you will be able to eat soft foods again. Although, it’s wise to avoid using a straw for the first few days as the pressure of sucking can pull off clots.
Soup and yogurt are good foods to try. The clot in your socket will eventually fall off once the gum has grown over the exposed bone. If it falls off too early or doesn’t form at all, you have a dry socket and need to go back to your dentist.
The pain should be gone, but you might feel a little discomfort still.
First Fortnight
Once the pain has gone and the socket has healed up, you may still feel a little odd. The new gum may be sensitive and your jaw may ache a little bit still.
Everything should be healed up nicely. It will take time getting used to having a gap in your mouth.
1 Month Later
Over time, your teeth may start to move around in your mouth. The gap may get smaller. If this makes it difficult to chew, head back to the dentists. Otherwise, the tooth pulling and healing process is complete and you’re ready to go back to harder foods.
What Symptoms to Expect
These are the usual symptoms that you can expect after tooth removal:
- Pain for the first day after the anesthetic wears off.
- Bleeding for the first 4 hours.
- Gum swelling and sensitivity.
- Jaw and headaches.
These symptoms are unusual, but nothing to worry about:
- Bone fragments working their way out of the socket. This is often quite shocking but normal in the first week after extraction. If the bone or tooth fragments don’t work their way out naturally, see your dentist to have them removed.
- Dry socket – the gum doesn’t heal over the bone, so it is left exposed. It may clear up quickly by forming another scab or you may need to see your dentist for treatment. They will usually dress the socket and give you something for the pain.
If you see any of these symptoms, it’s best to go back to the dentist as you may have an infection or clotting problem:
- Continued, excessive bleeding for 6+ hours.
- Nausea or a fever.
- Unpleasant smells, tastes or oozes from the socket.
- Radiating pain that lasts for several days.
3 Remedies to Alleviate Tooth Removal Pain
Whether you’ve run out of painkillers or are just looking for a more natural, drug-free way to ease the pain and heal the socket, these 3 remedies are ideal.
- Salt water rinses. Great for helping the socket to heal up in record time. Use 1 teaspoon of salt in warm water once or twice daily after the initial 24 hours. Not only will this gently remove anything lingering in the socket, but it will also soothe the gums rather than inflaming them like some mouthwashes.
- When applying ice, you will numb the gums and the surrounding area. Press the ice against the side of your mouth or let it rest inside your mouth – don’t suck the ice, it will have the same effect as sucking on a straw in the first 24 hours. Don’t apply ice for more than 10 minutes at a time.
- Clove oil. This will relieve the pain in your gums when gently rubbed on. Use a Q-tip to very softly apply the oil around the tooth extraction area. Don’t poke into the socket as this might dislodge a clot or inflame the area.
Tooth Extraction Recovery FAQ
3 common questions you may have after the tooth extraction process. Pain and discomfort are normal, but please do consult your dentist if you notice any odd symptoms during tooth extraction healing.
Question: Can you use Orajel after having a tooth pulled?
Answer: Yes, this is a topical anesthetic that’s ideal for painful gums. It will soothe the pain quicker than most capsule painkillers.
Question: How long does it take for a dry socket to go away?
Answer: If left untreated it can take several weeks or a month to completely heal. This isn’t an infection, so don’t take antibiotics. A topical anesthetic or painkiller may be advisable to soothe the pain – consult your dentist.
Question: How long does it take for a cut in the gums to heal?
Answer: It depends on the cut and the location. It can usually take up to 2 weeks to heal unless the cut continues to re-open or becomes infected.

I had a moler tooth pulled one month ago and it still some blood and pain. it has not heeled over at all; my dentist gave me amoicillian it doesn’t seem to help. what should I do , and can this go into my sinus cavities.
Hi Barbara,
By the sound of it, you might have an infection in the bone under the removed tooth.
Amoxicillin is a common antibiotic that dentists prescribe, but it is often not enough, especially if there is swelling and the pain is persistent. Your dentist could prescribe you 200mg Metronidazole to go with the amoxicillin.
Some symptoms of an exposed sinus may include:
Liquid coming out of the nose while drinking
Some intermittent nose bleeding sourced from the site of the extraction
Air escaping from your nose into your mouth while breathing.
In any of these cases you should contact your dentist ASAP.
I had a molar extracted in February and there is still a huge hole! I have no idea why, I’ve never had it go this long. It was a very infected tooth before and after the extraction. It’s still there though. It doesn’t hurt at all, food just gets stuck in there and I have to dig it out otherwise it’s annoying! Suggestions?
I had a lower molar extracted 10 days ago. I have large tori that is still swollen and very tender to the touch. Is this common? How much longer should I be in pain?
Hi.
I had an upper molar removed 7 weeks ago. The dentist had to do some drilling to get it out and also had to make an incision into the gums which was then stitched up. About 4 days after the extraction, she also had to “clean up” some gum tissue that wasn’t healing properly.
The site has still not healed and I still get some pain and sensitivity there. I’ve been back to the dentist twice and they put me on Amoxicillin ten days ago. I’m now on round 2 of Amoxicillin. I had an oral surgeon look at it yesterday and he said sometimes the tissue doesn’t heal properly and needs to be dealt with and also there are some bone slivers still working their way out. He wants to see me again in two weeks to check on it again.
I’ve also been having headaches, but don’t know if those are related to the procedure or stress or sinus related. I also have a pending re-treatment next week of a failed root canal on a lower molar, same side, randomly discovered on x-ray.
Is this upper extraction site ever going to heal?
Thank you for reading my post! I’m an anxious patient, for sure.
It’s been two weeks since I had a infected root canal th removed. It is now white and dark red is this normal?
after three weeks my gum is very sore. why and when can I expect relief
I’ve had a molar that had a root canal removed today. I’m surprised at how white the gum is in that place. How long did it take to heal and did you choose to do an implant or bridge? Are you pleased with your choice?
Hello i had my bottom right molar and wisdom tooth out 15 days ago and 2 days ago this yellow stuff started filling up my molar socket, so i kept rinsing it out and it just kept filling back up, no pain or smell just wierd . But then I woke up yesterday and it turned into a hard yellow scab like thing over it that wont come off and it appears to be making the hole bigger? And deeper.. do you have any idea what this could be? Thank you! Im really freaked out about this
I had an upper molar pulled out a month and a half ago. The week after I was hospitalized a couple times the week after. Now the hole is still there and a bad smell. I can’t chew on that side or anything. It is not painful regularly. Sometimes my upper jaw will be in pain. I’m at a loss.
You might have gotten good stuck in the hole.
Hello,
I had an upper wisdom tooth pulled 3 months ago. Healing has been just fine. I have a “dip” where the tooth used to be. Big enough that food does get caught in it. Will this ever fill in the rest of the way or should I consult my dentist to see if he can do anything about it? Having to check it for food every time I eat is a little annoying, especially since I got rid of that wisdom tooth for the same reason!
I had a permanent crown and the pain and radiated in my head ear and tooth. started after a day. So after a week I went for a second opinion the dentist said I had infection and the other nerve is dying. Either root canal or extraction. So I decided to get extracted. I had my first molar extracted 3 days ago, I still have pain around the area and my throat is hurting. Sometimes it radiate the pain in my head and ear. I’m taking amoxicillin 500. Ibuprofen and icing and gargle warm water with salt 2x a day. Why am i still have pain?
I got my bottom molar pulled 4 days ago, everyone said it seems to be healing fine. But the last 2 days especially today I’ve had the worst pain in it. Is it bc I am rinsing too much with salt water, or maybe I got food in it. What could be the reasoning for it to hurt worse than it did before?
Are you feeling any better??
I had a botyem right molar pulled ywo werks ago that was also abcessed. My yooth eas stuck underneath my oyher tooth because yhey are both slanted in my mouth. Anyway we finally got it out and i staryed having very deep pain before i even left the dentist. There is a hole sorya big mor from where the abcess was. Its not seemed to be closing u can see down in it. Is this normal?? Never had it take this long to have a extraction heal??
I had a root canal and I’m having a lot of pain still after almost a week. I have another molar right next to it and it also is acting up and very painful but that tooth had a root canal and a crown put over it over 2 years ago and still acts up from time to time.
In the portion of the text titled “1 month” later. It talks about your teeth will feel like they’re moving? What does that mean?
blood clot came off at the 7th day, no bleeding nor pain, is this normal
I had 3 upper teeth on my right side pulled three days ago. I have very little pain where the teeth were but I have some achiness/soreness on the bottom right tooth. Is this normal
i had my wisdom tooth pulled Tuesday and i had a root canal done on the other one next to it. I went in for a checkup Wednesday and they said everything looks good. To keep up the good work. However, today I see that in some spots it has white around it and some spots it doesn’t. He stitched it. Does that sound like its still healing right or does that sound like it can be part of a blood clot forming? I go Wednesday to get the crown so they can check then, I’m just curious what the different is. Meaning is the white stuff forming a good thing or does that sound like a blood clot? Its not really hurting much right now.
Hi everyone. To anyone experiencing a white coating on the gum around the extracted area, this is fine. It’s part of the healing process kind of like a scab expect these areas are absorbing all the saliva in the mouth and become somewhat waterlogged. Don’t remove by force and let it remove itself over time.
Anyone that’s having really bad pain within the socket between 1-10 days after the extraction, this could be a sign of dry socket caused by smoking / sucking on a straw / or rinsing to hard. Go and see you dentist as this will need to be packed and dressed. You’ll know if you have this, it’s a 15 out of 10 pain.
Regarding rinsing with warm salt water, 1 tea spoon of salt with warm water and a gentle swish around the mouth, don’t go mad with the swishing. Also don’t do this within the first 24 hours as you may dislodged any blood clots that are forming and potential cause a dry socket.
The gum healing process takes time so be patient. If you’ve had multiple teeth removed it will take longer than just one or two extractions. Dont play with the area with your tongue or fingers, it will only make it worse. Around 2 weeks would be a common time frame for the gums to start looking a bit better.
Soreness of other teeth and the jaw / face is very common. Remember a removal is an easy quick process but can be traumatic to the surrounding teeth and gums. This pain should subside within 3-8 days and take ibuprofen to ease the swelling and pain as this is a great inflammatory.
Empty sockets can take up to 3-6 months to fully cover over so keep an eye on them for the first few weeks but after that you should be clear of dry socket or infections, and food getting stuck should naturally fall out with a gentle mouth rinse or brushing.
A little about my situation. I had 12 teeth removed on March 18th including all wisdom teeth. Was performed under GA and had dissolvable stitches placed to help the recovery and prevent infection. I’ve had other teeth out in the past too so know the pain your all going through. It’s now the 22nd and my gums look like a warzone but are healing well, just looks much worse than they are. I’ve had everything from abscesses to dry socket over the years so understand just how painful teeth can be. Their a pain to get, pain to keep, and pain to loose!
I also have immediate dentures that will be placed in the coming week or so, I know these can be a painful time of adjusting so will keep you all posted on how that goes.
Try not to worry yourselves too much as this only makes it worse. If your in lots of pain aside from the common throbbing and swelling then consult your dentist, other leave the wounds alone and keep them clean with a light rinsing.
I’m not a dentist so don’t quote me on anything above, but again I’ve been through so much with my teeth over the years and seen and spoken with so many professionals I feel like a dentist at times lol.
Hope everyone heals quickly and as pain free as possible. I will also keep updating here as my stitches dissolve and gums improve etc.
Helpful info. I have also had extensive dental work. Recently had a apicoectomy which took 2 weeks to recover now had tooth removed and swelling in gums still causing a lot of discomfort. The second dentist the one who did tooth extraction was not hygenic so complicated it and caused multiple large mouth ulcers in area that was worked on. A recent follow up she stated pain couldn’t be related to dry socket as this doesn’t occur in upper jaw and no signs of infection and will just take while to heal. May get another opinion as doesn’t make sense the length of recovery time. All the comments you stated above appeared to be accurate so thanks
About the same time as your post I had the last of my teeth (front upper and lower to just past the incisors) extracted and an upper plate and lower partial put in. It’s May 8th and the pain from the h/w is awful. At first dentist did minor fixes until he finally saw an area causing me excruciating pain. The edge of the partial st joint had sliced into my cheek and gums. And it’s just continued to be a parade of horrors! Now I’m told the pain I have can’t be helped due to my swelling!!!! Take 2 Advil every six hours. Eat only once a day and have to force myself to eat then! Chewing is so painful I’m never able to eat 1/2 piece of baked chicken! The pain of chewing ends my efforts to eat more. When my jaw teeth were extracted I had a couple of very painful hard lumps in my gums. After reading online it’s likelt tooth shards, root pieces, splinters of bone working thrir way out. I was told to massage them often! Yeah, right! Hurt like hell, but I did. after many months they were gone. Don’t know if they came out during sleep or what! Now with my front upper/lower teeth I counted about have 12 tiny hard knots under my gums, just as painful as the last ones but now I have appliances on top of them rubbing 24/7 unless I’m salt water rinsing or cleaning them. I even have to sleep in them!!! Hey so bad the other night when I awoke the next morn I had taken the top plate out during my sleep and placed in on the night stand!
I asked the dentist if they were pieces of bone or tooth fragments and he insisted it wasn’t. He said it’s just accumulations I need to massage until they come out or dissolve! I’m now stymied as to what they actually are! If shards that can be removed to make my life a little more comfortable I’ll do it! This has become unbearable and causing me depression and feeling vulnerable and helpless. I’m overwhelmed so if anyone can help suggest anything or whatever, please be my guest! Waiting with bated breath.! Thanks so much.
I’m scheduled tomorrow for my rear two right lower molars (both very brittle an broken), as well as a wisdom tooth that is broken to the gum line and mostly healed over, to be extracted, and the front tooth of the 3 is infected, though I think between my lancing of the bubble and subsequent antibiotics, is nearly cleared up. I know it’s a difficult thing, but how does a row of teeth like this, which will likely break and crumble during extraction, generally heal up?
I had a tooth extraction about a month ago with stitches they also removed some bone & I still have the stitched but they have this white stuff on it. it doesnt hurt or ache. doesnt stink & it isnt oozing any strange liquid. is it ok to still have stitched nd white stuff after a month
I had my 5th tooth extracted and today marks 1 week. They followed up checked it on 3 days ago. I was looking at it and appears like a slight hole still that goes down. Image https://imgur.com/undefined No pain at all and a little nervous a dry socket? Is this normal after a week of healing?
I just had some teeth extracted one of them have a hard lump on the side it doesn’t hurt but it feels weird and sharp is that normal ? Also this Thursday will be a week and it formed almost on the third day after the extraction
